Radical Is the Root

Radical is not extreme. Radical is the root. The word radical comes from the Latin radix, meaning “root.”

Which is to say, before “radical” was about political extremity or extreme sports or health hacking, it was about plants. It was about the dark, subterranean architecture that feeds whatever shows itself above ground.

This matters because when you start thinking about roots, actual botanical roots, you realize they’re not iconic or picturesque. They’re not even visible most of the time. Roots are structural, functional, persistent, and (if you’ve ever seen them push through asphalt) basically indifferent to whatever obstacles polite society has placed overhead.

( This is behaviour we very much admire here at Fundamental.Berlin ) Good design never starts with the bloom, the part you can Instagram and feel clever about, it starts in the invisible system of convictions and ideas that give the visible thing its shape and coherence. Roots don’t care about seasonal fashion; they care about anchoring the organism when the wind shifts. Roots aren’t nice.

They force their way into what resists them. They tangle. They hold on.

We’re not interested in a beauty that’s frictionless, in light that’s unshaped by obstruction. The best kind of brilliance is the kind that’s been bent or refracted by some kind of resistance, something that keeps it from being more just glare. There’s memory in roots: folk traditions, geometric ratios, proportional systems that go back centuries.

We don’t replicate them wholesale: (nostalgia is a dead end), but we do graft new growth onto them, like gardeners who actually want fruit. Our work, our objects, mirrors, lamps, vessels, are never just objects. They’re anchors in a room, tethering the space to moments you’ll remember even if you forget the thing itself.

So radical can never be novelty for novelty’s sake. It’s about the deep structures that make novelty possible, even inevitable. The bloom changes.

The root stays.
