Gravity Column in Milan

Fundamental gets vertigo at Milan Design Week. Most objects submit to gravity. It's quite a compelling force, and one that we have been examining for some time with our GRAVITY range.

The GRAVITY CENTERPIECE models the moment a black hole succumbs to gravity. For our latest work we do the opposite: GRAVITY COLUMN stands its ground. Height, or verticality, is not a matter of scale but of intent.

To go tall is to shave away options, there is no volume to compensate. Proportion is exposed. The object must resolve itself, visually fragile and conspicuous.

For Milan Design Week, Fundamental presents a nearly two-metre Gravity Column. A mirror polished steel cage holds five glass vessels in strict vertical alignment. It does not so much decorate a room as define it, introducing an axis around which a new world can revolve.

Into the centre of this constraint steps floral sculptor Hamish Powell. His work tends to appear in settings where the margin for error is slim and the audience is not forgiving, rooms that are already complete, most recently re-interpreting the LACMA for the Vanity Fair Oscars Party. He has been asked to treat the column not as a container but as a condition.

The result will not be a bouquet. It will be a structure: a composition that works with, rather than against, the discipline of height. The installation will be on view with Deoron at Via Padova 11 from April 20–26.
