East Berlin in the 1950s was a tense place. German poet & playwright Berthold Brecht and his wife Helene Weigel found the perfect weekend escape: every city dweller's dream of a small plot on a lake surrounded by trees
The section of this small house really maximises the impact. Designed by talented Heimatstil/Jugendstil architect Bruno Möhring, the layout is particularly astute. It allows for a very generous double height hall, which takes full advantage of the amazing western view. Often double height spaces can be overblown and drafty. Because the ceilings in the other spaces are so low, the double height dining hall really just reads as a large room with a large window.
The front of the house contains 2 tiny bedrooms, a little kitchen and a parlour, as well as overflow sleeping space for overnight guests in the attic. Through this configuration, the house can serve as a cosy retreat for a couple or family, a backdrop for an intense dinner, or a place for a swell party. What more could you ask for?
